Age: 0

Sex: female

Date: 1 Apr 1951

Place: Grand Union Canal, Broadwater Lane Bridge, Harefield

The body of a newly-born female child was found in the Grand Union Canal at Broadwater Lane in Harefield on the Sunday afternoon 1 April 1951.

It was found by an 11-year-old girl who lived in Priory Avenue whilst she was out playing in the recreation ground.

After seeing the body, she told a passing man who informed the police.

It was thought that the body had been in the water for about three months.

A pathologist said that he thought that the child had been prematurely born but said that he could not determine whether the child had lived or not.

However, the coroner said that in law, the child must be presumed to have lived.

The verdict that the child had been found dead and that there was no evidence to show whether it had lived or not was then recorded.
