Place: Monkland Canal, Drumpellier, Coatbridge

The body of a newly-born male child was found in the Monkland Canal at Drumpellier, Coatbridge on Tuesday 8 January 1952 about 80 yards west of the Blair Road bridge.

The child was wrapped up in newspaper dated 1 October 1951 and tied up in a brown paper parcel.

The post mortem stated that the child had lived for some time and had been in the water for between two and four weeks. However the pathologist said that he was unable to make a statement regarding the child’s cause of death.

It was discovered by a woman from Drumpellier Home Farm. She said that she had seen the parcel floating in the water several times as she was passing, but that it was not until the Tuesday that she thought of investigating. She said that when she opened the parcel, she found the dead body of the child inside and went to inform the police.
