Place: Whiteley Woods, Sheffield

The body of a partly burned newly born female child was found wrapped up in a paper parcel in the ladies' lavatories at the entrance to Whiteley Woods in Sheffield.

The body was found by a woman who had lived in 3 Court 1 House in Monmouth Street in Sheffield. She said that she found the newspaper parcel and was then horrified to find that it contained the body of a newly born child.

When the doctor examined the child's body, he said that he found extensive burns on the body and a large wound to the back of the child’s head and another between its shoulder blades.

He said that he thought that the child had probably had a separate existence for about 24 hours and that he thought that the burns had been caused after the child had died., noting that he thought that they indicated that an attempt had been made to destroy the child’s body by burning it.

He said that he thought that the cause of the child's death was haemorrhage of the surface of the brain, noting that the violence might have been accidental or criminal.
