Man

The body of a man was found in Milton Lake near Furze Lane in Milton, Hampshire at 11.20am on 22 January 1954.

The body was first seen by a man that lived in Posbrooke Road in Milton who informed the police who then took his body out of the lake. It was found at the Furze Lane end of the creek.

When he was examined, the medical evidence showed that he had only been in the water for a few hours.

It was said that when the man was taken out of the lake that he had had both of his hands in his pockets and that an almost empty quarter bottle of whisky was found in his pocket. It was thought that he might have visited licensed premises shortly before his death.

It was reported that it was thought that he had fallen into the water and struck his head on a slab of concrete which was nearby.

The man's identity was unknown and the police later intensified their efforts to trace anyone that knew him and put photographs of him on display at all the police stations in the city appealing for anyone that might be able to assist to check with the pictures.

The man was described as being:

• Aged about 30.
• 5ft 4 1/2in tall.
• Brown hair.
• Hazel eyes.
• Well built.
• Several teeth missing from the front upper jaw.
• No scars ot tattoo marks on the body.
• Wearing a fawn-grey gabardine raincoat, double breasted flannel jacket, trousers, blue shirt, dark blue tie, red scarf, grey, red and blue diamond pattern socks, well-worn brown suede shoes and a brown trilby hat.

Property that was found on him included:

• A Yale key.
• Two £1 notes and 8s 2 1/2d in cash.

Milton Lake was also referred to as Milton Creek.
