The body of a man was found on Dartmoor near Bridestone by hikers.

The body was that of a fully clothed man and was partly decomposed. A brown bottle containing fluid was found in his jacket and it was sent away for analysis.

The man's body was found on Dartmoor near Bridestone, Oakhampton on Saturday 5 September 1953.

It was first thought that it might have been the body of Henryk Borynski, the Bradford priest who went missing on 13 July 1953. However, that was soon ruled out.

Laundry marks on the man’s clothes were found in his clothing:

  • K2079 over an 8 or B.
  • NE245 over an 8 or B.
  • Y110 over an 8 or B.

The Oakhampton police said that there was no evidence of foul play.

They issued a description of the man in an effort to identify him:

  • Age about 40.
  • Between 5ft 10in and 5ft 11in tall.
  • Receding forehead.
  • Well built.
  • Well dressed.
  • Hands carefully kept.
  • Dressed in a green-grey gaberdine raincoat, dark grey flannels and grey tweed sports jacket with grey socks, brown brogue-type shoes, white shirt and collar, white vest and a tie of fawn and red and green mixture.
  • Wearing a wristlet watch.

During their investigation the police said that they were centering their inquiries to identify the man on Bideford in Devon and Paisley in Renfrewshire.
