Edward John Bedford and Flora Barden were found dead at a property in St John's Terrace, Lewes.

Miss Barden was Edward Bedford's housekeeper.

Miss Barden was found dead on the kitchen floor in the basement.

Edward Bedford was a former headmaster at Eastbourne School of Arts and Science until 1952 and was also formerly the curator of the Lewes Borough Museum. He was known as an authority on natural history. It was noted that his house was filled with cases containing butterflies, moths and other specimens that he had collected.

Their inquest returned a verdict of misadventure on Edward Bedford and natural causes on Flora Barden. The police said that there was no sign of foul play and no indication of suicide.
