Albert James Atkinson

Albert James Atkinson was found injured in Wordsworth Street at about 12.30am on 1 January 1954. He was taken home and then taken by ambulance to Sefton General Hospital where he died at 1.10am.

He had lived nearby in Hartington Road, Princes Park.

He was found in a collapsed condition near his home and his death was later found to have been due to cerebral haemorrhage. After he was taken home he was found to be without his jacket.

Because of the mysterious way in which Albert Atkinson was found the Liverpool CID and members of the Flying Squad were immediately called out. However, the police later said that they had ruled out foul play and thought that he might have been injured in a fall.

It was heard that the last half hour of his life was a mystery. He was last seen leaving the Tagus Hill Club, a social club in Tagus Street off Lodge Lane at about midnight and was found about half-an-hour later in Wordsworth Street injured. However, the route he took from the social club to the place where he was found was not known. However, it was noted that Hartington Road was within a quarter of a mile from the Tagus Hill Club and that Wordsworth Street was between the two.

The police had appealed for anyone who had seen Albert Atkinson in the club or in the 30 minutes between when he left and when he was found to come forward.

When Albert Atkinson was found he had been bleeding about the nose.

Albert Atkinson was a labourer and the father of a young child. At the time of his death his wife was expecting another child.
