Lewis John Smith

Age: 37

Sex: male

Date: 17 Dec 1954

Place: Tower No.4 Colliery, Rhigos, Aberdare

Lewis John Smith was found injured in a coal mine and later died.

He had been working at Tower No. 4 Colliery in Rhigos in Aberdare.

A verdict of accidental death was returned.

He was found lying at the side of a roadway underground whilst he had been on an extra shift bleeding from his nose and with a cut on his forehead. His inquest on Monday 25 February 1955 stated that he had been found lying in the roadway behind a tram of coal after he had embedded a wooden sleeper in the coal.

When he was taken to the surface it was found that he was dead.

It was noted that there had been no roof falls and that there had been no trams nearby and that there was nothing to indicate how he had come to be injured.

At his inquest, the Coroner said, 'Obviously, Smith had a very severe blow, but you will probably feel there is not sufficient evidence to say exactly what happened'.
