The body of a newly-born female child was found in a paper bag in a cupboard at 603 Broomfield Road in Glasgow.
The child's death was said to have been due to neglect at birth.
A man was later brought before the Glasgow Sheriff Court to answer what was described as a 'rather unusual' charge under the Children and Young Persons (Scotland) Act 1937 in that he had neglected the child.
It was reported that the man admitted having on 9 or 10 November 1954 at 603 Broomfield Road in Glasgow, where he had cohabited with a young woman who had just given birth to the child, neglected the baby by failing to provide adequate clothing, medical aid and attention and that the child had died shortly after through that neglect.
The Sheriff said he had formed the impression that there had however been no deliberate intention to neglect the child and that in view of that he would take a more lenient view than otherwise and passed a sentence of three months on the man.
The court heard that the man had told the police that he had assisted the woman in giving birth and that the child had been born alive and that he had placed it on the floor whilst he attended to the woman and that when he later showed the baby to the woman they found that it was dead after which they placed it in the bag and put it in the cupboard.
