The body of a newly-born female child was found in the ladies cloakroom at Preston Railway Station on the evening of Tuesday 23 February 1954.

The body was found by a 19-year-old girl clerk who worked in the station’s refreshment room in the ladies cloakroom on platform two.

The police said that they thought that the child's body had been left there between 3pm and 5.15pm on the Tuesday.

The child's body had been wrapped up in brown paper and tissue paper then put into a brown paper carrier bag.

It was thought that the child had been born about ten days earlier.
