Age: 0

Sex: female

Date: 9 Mar 1954

Place: Tunbridge Wells Common, Tunbridge Wells, Kent

The body of a newly-born female child was found on Tunbridge Wells Common on the afternoon of Tuesday 9 March 1954.

It was found wrapped up in newspaper by some schoolboys near a path leading to the Higher Cricket Ground.

An open verdict was returned.

The inquest heard that the child was thought to have been between six and eight weeks premature although the pathologist said that it had been born alive.

The police said that they had been unable to trace the child's mother.

The pathologist that examined the child's body said that there were no signs of injury to its body and that he thought that it must have died within a few minutes of being born.

When the Coroner said, 'Really it boils down to inattention at birth', the pathologist replied, 'Yes'.
