Steven Clark

Age: 23

Sex: male

Date: 28 Dec 1992

Place: Saltburn

Steven Clark went missing on 28 December 1992.

In September 2020 his parents were arrested on suspicion of his murder, however, they were later released without charge on 16 February 2021.

It was initially thought that the last sighting of him was at 3pm in Saltburn when he entered some toilets. However, in September 2020, following certain developments and the arrest of the two people, his parents, it was considered that the last sighting of him was as he was walking along High Street towards Marske Square towards The Ship Inn at about 3.45pm, before it got dark.

He had earlier been to the Rathbone Society in Redcar where he worked to support people with disabilities and where he had previously made a video that was released shortly after in a bid to find him. The video was later re-released in December 2020.

After he vanished it was noted that his personal belongings, including his wallet, glasses and watch, were still in his home in Marske, near Redcar.

The police said that Steven Clark was a sociable character and was liked by friends.

Following the arrest of his parents in September 2020, his mother said that she 'absolutely' denied murdering him. She described the situation as being 'absolutely ludicrous'.

Steven Clark had a pronounced limp after he was hit by a truck when he was a child, leaving him with a damaged arm and leg. It was also said that he was unable to use his left arm. He had lived in South Africa for the first twenty years of his life. The police noted that his life in Markse, 'was different from the more restricted way of life overseas'.

In November 2020 the police released a letter that they had received in 1999 claiming to know who was responsible. The letter had been sent to Guisborough Police Station and the police had earlier appealed for the writer of the letter to come forward. A police detective said that the content of the letter was very precise in its nature, saying, 'The letter writer intimated that Steven was dead and that they claim to know the person responsible. It was 21 years ago so the letter writer could have died since then, but if anyone recognises the handwriting, we would urge them to get in touch'.

In December 2020 the writer of the letter was said to have come forward.

Later the same month, on 28 December 2020 the police re-released several images and clips from the Rathbone Society disability charity training video that Steven Clark  had been in. The video had been released about a year after his disappearance in an effort to trace him but the police said that they were re-releasing the video again to show how Steven Clark walked in the hope that it might jog someone's memory.

The police said, 'Steven had a distinctive walk as a result of a childhood road accident and the footage shows his walk, and you also hear his voice when he is sat at a computer and speaking'.

In April 2021 it was reported that the police were searching a hillside at Saltburn Bank for clues regarding his disappearance.

Steven Clark was described as:

  • 6ft 3in tall.
  • Medium build.
  • Blue eyes.
  • Dark brown hair.
  • Last seen wearing a maroon crew neck jumper, a navy-blue parka with fur hood, blue denim jeans, and grey trainers.

He was described as an avid Arsenal fan and a lover of music who played a baritone euphonium and to have been a great swimmer. He was also said to have loved computing and IT.
