Leroy Ottey

Age: 25

Sex: male

Date: 17 Oct 2018

Place: Alderson Road, Wavertree, Liverpool

Leroy Ottey was shot in Alderson Road, Wavertree outside his own home on Wednesday 17 October 2018 at 10.40pm.

He was shot as he entered his hallway just after having got out of a taxi. After he was shot he lay on a neighbours doorstep and asked a passer-by to take him to hospital, saying, 'I have been shot I have been shot. Get a car and take me to hospital'. The passer-by said that when he asked him who shot him Leroy Ottey didn't answer and that a woman that was also there shouted at him and asked him not to ask stupid questions.

He was taken to hospital where he died in the early hours of Thursday 18 October 2018. His post-mortem examination found that he died from multiple gunshot wounds. He had been shot in the body and one of his knees.

Around the time he was shot a black Audi S3 Quattro car was seen to drive down Alderson Road towards Lawrence Roads at speed with its lights off and the police said that they were trying to trace the occupants. The car was found burnt out in Abbeystead Road, Childwall the following morning, 18 October 2018 at about 6.40am less than two miles away. It had been stolen in Derby earlier and had since been involved in several crashes.

A neighbour recalled hearing several loud bangs at the time.

Another person that lived on the street said that they recalled seeing the black Audi car pull away quickly from the scene but noted that there was no screeching of tyres as it did so.

Six people were arrested on suspicion of his murder but released under investigation. They were:

  • 25-year-old man from Toxteth.
  • 30-year-old man from Wavertree.
  • 31-year-old man from Rainhill.
  • 30-year-old man from Toxteth.
  • 24-year-old man from Toxteth.
  • 23-year-old man from Toxteth.

Leroy Ottey was known locally as Mari. He was said to have only recently moved into Alderson Road several months earlier. A person that lived nearby said, 'I remember seeing lots of fancy cars pulling up at the house. There was also a bit of loud music from time to time at the house. But things had been very quiet there for the last week or so. I was told that he travelled everywhere by taxi. He would leave in a taxi and come home in a taxi'.

His inquest in November 2019 recorded a verdict of unlawful killing.

He had helped to run a family restaurant called Sista Sue's in Lodge Lane, but his family sold it after his murder and moved out of the family home.
