Man

Age: 60

Sex: male

Date: 2 Jun 2017

Place: River Thames, Russell Road, Shepperton

The body of a man was found in the River Thames near Russell Road in Shepperton at about 2pm on 2 June 2017.

A 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of his murder shortly after but nothing more is known.

The man was said to have been in his 60s.

The police said that they thought that both men were known to each other.

Shortly after the man was taken out of the river the police said, 'At this stage the deceased man has not been formally identified, and we are looking into the circumstances that led to him being found in the water. The team and I are focused on a number of enquiries to try and establish what has happened, and will be carrying out various searches in the area, as well as making house to house visits. We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in Shepperton last night, particularly between 10pm and 1am this morning'.

However, after arresting the 47-year-old man the police said that they were 'keeping an open mind into what may have occurred'.

A local resident who spoke about the incident said, 'I can't believe it, and can't believe a possible murder could take place, especially here. Everyone says they moved to Shepperton because you don't get things like this happening. It's a quiet, residential area, and very safe. You don't expect anything like this to happen. I didn't hear any noise at all during the night'.

Another resident said, 'I looked out of my window at about 2.30am as there was obviously some action outside, flashing lights and around two to three big police vans and one or two other cars. I'm not sure whether the current cordon justifies having four or five policemen here, they don't seem very pleased. I'm relieved they haven't got machine guns'.

However, nothing more about the incident is known.
