The body of a newly born female child was found in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal near Calverley Woods.
A verdict of murder by a person or persons unknown was returned at the inquest which was held in Pudsey.
The police said that they visited more than 5,000 houses within a five mile radius of the place where the child was found but had been unable to obtain any information.
The pathologist that carried out the post mortem said that the chid's cause of death was shock following a dislocated neck and that he was satisfied that the dislocation of the neck had taken place during life. He also estimated that the child had lived for at least 15 minutes.
