Percy Lintott Foxwell

Percy Lintott Foxwell was found in the River Thames just off the waterworks filter beds at Surbiton.

He had lived in Ditton Lawn, Thames Ditton and had been a member of the London Stock Exchange.

He had been missing since 20 December 1900 and was found in the river on 31 January 1901.

He was last seen in Finsbury Park at 7pm on 20 December 1900.

Before the discovery of his body, Messrs Pearce-Jones and Company, of 33 John Street, Bedford Row, London, offered a reward of £100 for information on 3 January 1901 that led to his discovery, if alive, or to the recovery of his body, if dead.

He was described as:

• 5ft 10in tall.
• 40 years old.
• Thick black hair and eyelashes.
• Small dark moustache.
• Otherwise clean shaven.
• Ordinary figure.
• Wearing a black suit and overcoat (made by Thomas, of Brook Street), black shoes and a black bowler hat.

He was said to have had a season ticket and a gold hunter presentation watch on him.

He was described as having been happily married with two children and with no financial or other worries.

His disappearance was described as inexplicable.

An advertisement was also placed in the 'agony' column of a morning newspaper on 28 December 1900, which was itself repeated the same day in an article in the Westminster Gazette.

Some of his friends, before his discovery, said that they thought that he had been attacked, robbed and thrown in the river.

His disappearance was said to have caused much distress in Thames Ditton where he had been well known as a golf player and much liked.
