Date: 26 Jan 1956

Place: 52 Lord Street, Jarrow

The skeleton of a child was found under some floorboards in a house at 52 Lord Street in Jarrow on 26 January 1956.

The body was found by a labourer that had lived in Salem Street on the ground about two feet below the floorboards and about three feet from the fireplace.

The police said that when they examined the remains that they thought that they had been there for many years, noting that amongst the debris they found a newspaper carrying election results for November 1922 and part of another newspaper that was dated 16 November 1922.

The police said that they made extensive inquiries with regards to all the people that had lived at the address since 1914 but they had not been able to connect anybody with the body.

When the Coroner summed up he said that taking all the circumstances into account the proper verdict in the case would be that the body of the deceased child was found on 26 January 1956 under the floorboards but that there was no evidence to say how it had been put there or show the cause of death.

Lord Street has been redeveloped and is now called Abbey Drive.
