Robert Hill

Age: 49

Sex: male

Date: 6 Feb 1958

Place: Thornton Reservoir, Thornton, Leicester

Robert Hill was found in Thornton Reservoir on Thursday 6 February 1958.

He was a miner and had lived at 107 Main Street in Thornton.

The Coroner said that there was not sufficient evidence to show how Robert Hill had got into the water and an open verdict was returned.

His wife said that on the Wednesday evening that Robert Hill had gone out telling her that he was going to watch a darts match at one of the public houses in the village, noting that he had seemed to be in good spirits at the time.

However, she said that when he didn't return she reported the matter to the police.

She noted that Robert Hill had no particular worries, but noted that he had been a little disappointed that a plaster casing on his leg which he had following a broken ankle, had not been removed at the appointed time.

Robert Hill's body was found floating in the reservoir by an electrician that had lived in Main street and was later recovered by the police.

The police said that when they examined the bank of the reservoir that they found impressions that might have been left by the Iron May that was attached to the casing of Robert Hill's leg. They added that there was no sign of a struggle in the weeds on the reservoir bank.

Robert Hill had worked at Desford Colliery.
