Andrew MacColl

Age: 26

Sex: male

Date: 27 May 1957

Place: Heene Road, Worthing

Andrew MacColl was found on the beach opposite Heene Road in Worthing on the morning of Monday 27 May 1957.

He had a criminal record for theft which allowed him to be identified by his fingerprints.

His body was found partially clothed in a pair of jeans, socks and heavy army boots and he was found to have 12s 2½d in his pocket. A retired fireman that had lived in Charlecote Road in Worthing later found a shirt and a coat on the Friday morning at about 6am, the shirt being on the groin and the coat close by. When the coat was searched £14 11s 11½ d, two holiday cards, a National Insurance card in his name and other documents were found.

The pathologist that carried out his post mortem said that there were no marks of violence on him apart from two recent cuts on his right wrist which it were said were consistent with him having been knocked against rock.

Andrew MacColl was a native of Glasgow, a labourer and farm worker and was unmarried. He was said to have left home at the age of 14 and to  have travelled as a timber feller. He was said to have continually wandered the country with no visible means of support.

He had also served in the RASC until he was discharged in 1948.

His cause of death was given as drowning and an open verdict was returned, with the Coroner saying that there was insufficient evidence to show how he had come to be in the sea.
