Annie Borjesson

Age: 30

Sex: female

Date: 4 Dec 2005

Place: Prestwick Beach

Annie Borjesson was found dead on Prestwick Beach on 4 December 2005.

She was found face down on the beach fully clothed and it was claimed by the authorities that her most likely cause of death was drowning and a suspected suicide. However, an inquest was never held.

She was from Sweden and had been planning on flying home the following day and had travelled up to Prestwick airport the day before.

She was seen in CCTV footage leaving Prestwick international train station and shortly after entering the main airport terminal. However, it was noted that she had only spent five minutes in the airport building before she left, suddenly, without checking in for her flight that was due to leave later that evening with Ryanair.

She was then found dead less than 24 hours later on the beach.

Her passport, wallet, clothes and some books were found in a bag by her body.

It was claimed that she had committed suicide, however, her family said that they suspected foul play adding that they thought that the Scottish authorities were premature in determining her cause of death.

The case was further complicated by the fact that files detailing the investigation into her death by the Swedish and British authorities in Sweden were classified as being secret and when they were later released they were heavily redacted. The Swedish foreign ministry said that they had been redacted because they contained information relating to Sweden's relations with a foreign state and a foreign authority and that disclosure would damage Sweden's international relations or harm national interests.

Annie Borjesson's mother noted that even Annie Borjesson's cause of death had been hidden.

It was also noted that despite the unexplained circumstances surrounding her death that the Scottish Crown Office never granted her an inquest or a Fatal Accident Inquiry.

It was reported that following the redactions that her case generated a number of conspiracy theories.

It was also noted that one file that was in the release of files that referred to Annie Borjesson was dated 17 August 2004, four months before her death. However, The Scottish Crown Office suggested that the date was an error and that the correct date was at the top of the file.

In 2014 it was reported in the Scottish Mail on Sunday that there were connections between her death and alleged CIA rendition flights through Prestwick airport in 2005.

It was noted that Annie Borjesson had a similar name to Kristina Borjesson, an award-winning US journalist, who had a track record of holding US security agencies, such as the CIA, to account. It was suggested that she had been killed by the CIA in mistake for Kristina Borjesson who it was said had been looking into US rendition flights carrying terrorists through Prestwick Airport. However, it was added that there was no evidence to support that claim.

Annie Borjesson's mother also said that a person that had been helping her in connection with Annie Borjesson's death had been threatened by the police. She said that he had been being very helpful but that the police had gone to see him and told him that if he continued to help her and a murder investigation was opened that he would be the prime suspect.

Annie Borjesson's mother said in 2014, following a request by The Scottish Review for Police Scotland to re-open the case being refused, 'She was missing 16 hours before she was found dead. I’ve tried not to be too harsh on the Scottish police but it seems to me that they are the criminals if they are refusing to investigate a crime'.

In 2014, a close friend of Annie Borjesson said, 'It is not only a feeling that makes us all convinced that something terrible happened to our Annie, there are also so many strange and unexplained things, many of which we believe are strong evidence that shows that the case should be re-opened'.

Annie Borjesson had gone to Edinburgh in 2004 to study English.
