Justin Maynard was shot in the back in Tugford Close, Moss Side on 26 August 2003.

He was shot once in the head at about 6.45pm and pronounced dead at the scene.

During the investigation, the police said:

There is a strong possibility that there may be witnesses to Justin's murder who have not yet come forward. The people who were in the area on the night of his death may have information that could help us solve his murder and I would ask them to please come forward and speak to us. This inquiry is not going to go away and I can reassure them that all information will be treated in the strictest of confidence.

His murder was thought to have been related to a gang fued between the Gooch Gand and the Longsight Crew, even thought he was not a known gang-member. He had been hanging out near the Alexandra Park estate at the time and had ties to the Doddington gang. It was also suggested that his murder was related to a dispute between younger members of the Gooch Gang and Doddington Gang affilitates.
