Alfred Sandford died during a robbery at his farm, grove House Farm in Sutton Heath near St Helens on 24 July 1998.

Alfred Sandford suffered from a heart attack as four masked men, one of them wielding a shotgun, raided his farm.

They ransacked his house and left him to die.

It was noted that following the robbery an anonymous man called the police and they appealed for him to call back, in strict confidence. The police said, 'This man gave us some information regarding possible offenders and we would like him to contact us again in confidence. We are very interested in what he said'.

It was noted that whilst the police were racing out to attend to reports of his murder that they hit a 71-year-old women who required hospital treatment for serious injuries. The woman had been a great-grandmother and had lived in Gamble Avenue, St Helens.

Alfred Sandford was also referred to as Albert Sandford.
