An open verdict was returned on a newly born child that had been burned by its father after he said that it had been born dead.

At the inquest, the Coroner said, 'I think it must surely be true that it has never been the lot of any jury at any inquest to listen to a more gruesome and sickening story then you and I had to listen to today'.

It was heard that the father of the child had burned the child's body in the living-room fire after it was born dead and that he had afterwards put the ashes into a hole in the garden path because it was filled up with water in the wet weather.
