Patrick Malley was found in the River Tyne with a large stone tied to his ankles.
He was an Irish labourer and had lived at the Salvation Army Men's Palace in Newcastle and was said to have been about 40 years old.
At his inquest on Monday 23 June 1958 the Coroner said, 'He might have intended to take his life with this stone and the rope. On the other hand, there is the remotest possible chance that someone else tied it round his feet while he was asleep or something'.
