John Cobham went missing shortly after changing his will.
Nine months after he went missing the police opened a murder investigation.
His estate had been worth £200,000.
He had vanished in February 1994 and it was first thought that he had committed suicide after his car was found abandoned by the River Thames at Taplow.
However, his relatives contacted the police after they found that his initial will, which had left his estate to a nephew and some nieces, had been altered in favour of a 57-year-old former neighbour in Marlow.
A detective said, 'All the pensioner's family were written out of the will with no explanation'.
During the police search for John Cobham, the police used sniffer dogs and a JCB digger at a coal depot and waste land in Marlow.
Two men were arrested on suspicion of murder and attempting to obtain property by deception, but nothing more is known.
