John Pearson died in a hit and run incident.
He was knocked over in the early hours of New Year's day in Church Street, Eccles as he was going home from the local Labour party dance at the town hall.
John Pearson had been a bus driver as well as a Councillor and the chairman of the town's highways committee and had lived in Moathall Avenue in Eccles. A friend of his, the leader of the Council's Socialist group, said, 'This is a terrible shock. He was a very popular and very outspoken chap'.
The police said that they went out later to try and find the car that knocked him over, noting that it didn't stop.
