Gladys Hallam

Gladys Hallam was found dead in the River Soar at Sileby Mill, Sileby on the afternoon of Friday 3 July 1959.

She was pulled out of the river and artificial respiration and oxygen was given but she was found to be dead.

She had lived at 103 Barrow Road in Sileby and had been a hosiery worker.

She had been seen a few hours before she was found in the river in a public house where she was said to have drunk three halves of beer and bought four small bottles of Guinness to take away. However, the bottles of Guinness were never found.

The pathologist that carried out her post mortem said that Gladys Hallam died from shock following immersion in cold water.

Her husband said that Gladys Hallam had been a cheerful person and had never threatened herself. However, he noted that she could not swim.

An open verdict was returned.
