Baby

Age: 0

Sex: female

Date: 20 May 1959

Place: Leicester London Road Station, Leicester, Leicestershire

The body of a newly-born female child was found in a suitcase that had been handed in at the left luggage office of Leicester London Road Station.

The case had been handed in on Wednesday 20 May 1959 after it was retrieved from a train that had arrived from Birmingham that evening.

When no one had asked for the case by Saturday 23 May 1959 it was opened by a luggage attendant and was found to contain the body of the child. Following the discovery the luggage attendant called the police.

A pathologist said that the baby had died from asphyxia and lack of skilled care more than anything else. He noted that there were no marks of violence on the child's body.

An open verdict was returned at the inquest which concluded on Thursday 25 June 1959 it being recorded that the baby died from asphyxia due to lack of attention at birth.

The Coroner said nobody knew, or perhaps would ever know, the identity of the baby girl whose body was found in the suitcase that had been handed in.
