William Frederick Edwards

Age: unknown

Sex: male

Date: 27 Oct 1959

Place: Neath

William Frederick Edwards was found in the road seriously injured.

He had been riding his motorcycle at the time he came to be found in the road, but the pathologist said that his injuries were not consistent with him merely falling off his cycle.

Five witnesses gave evidence at his inquest to say that they had seen William Edwards lying in the road but had not heard any noise of a collision or seen any vehicle collide with his motorcycle.

The pathologist said that William Edwards had a fractured skull, fractures to twelve ribs on his right side and five ribs on his left, with many of his ribs fractured in two places.

A police inspector said that they had made many inquiries, including making radio broadcasts and releasing Press notices, to see whether any other information about his death could be obtained, but without success.

When the Coroner summed up he said, 'You can only go on the evidence that you have been given. Whether or not you find that Mr Williams died of a road accident or not is entirely up to you'.

The jury then returned a verdict of 'accidental death', stating that although they had no evidence of any collision, they thought that William Edwards must have died from some sort of road accident because of the amount of injuries he had sustained.

William Edwards had lived at 55 Illtyd Street in Neath.
