James Richard Knight

Age: 46

Sex: male

Date: 2 Mar 1960

Place: River Wear, Riverside Park, Chester-le-Street

James Richard Knight was found dead in the River Wear near Riverside Park in Chester-le-Street.

His mother-in-law, who lived in Summerdale, Shotley Bridge, said that James Knight disappeared after saying that he was going to meet his wife at a bus stop on the Tuesday night 1 March 1960.

She said, 'He told the children that he wouldn't be long'.

His body was found the following afternoon, 2 March 1906, in the river.

His mother-in-law noted that James Knight had received injuries to the tendon of his right leg in 1941 and that he had since been attending hospital periodically for it.

She added that he had also been worried about his wife's health.

The Coroner said, 'There's no evidence to show how he came to fall into the river. That's a complete mystery. And there's no evidence to show any disturbance of mind'.

An open verdict was then returned.

James Knight had been a colliery bricklayer.
