George Nicholls

Age: 54

Sex: male

Date: 3 Jul 1960

Place: Western Avenue, Northolt

George Nicholls was hit by a non-stop car that was not traced on the Western Avenue in Northolt near the Polish war memorial on 3 July 1960

He died about an hour after being hit. He had been taken to Hillingdon Hospital, arriving at 11.30pm, when he was found to be dead which was estimated to have been about an hour after the accident.

The police said that their hunt for clues included laboratory tests on his clothing, a search amongst garage proprietors over a very wide area to find the car and appeals put out by the BBC for witnesses of the accident to come forward. However, the police said that the car had not been traced and that no witnesses had come forward.

The police found 37ft long tyre marks on the road leading up to a point from where, 44ft further along, George Nicholls was found on the grass verge along with a broken car radio aerial.

George Nicholls's cause of death was given as being due to asphyxia due to fractured jaw-bones.

An open verdict was returned at his inquest.

He had been a labourer and had lived in Station View, Greenford.
