Baby

Age: 0

Sex: male

Date: 14 May 1960

Place: Hyde Park, Westminster, London

The body of a baby was found in a litter bin Hyde Park in Westminster on 14 May 1960.

The child was found in the refuse basket in Hyde Park opposite South Street and ten yards from East Carriage Road.

The refuse basket was usually emptied every three or four days.

After it was found it was taken to Hyde Park police station.

The pathologist that carried out the post mortem said that the child had weighed 3lb 5ozs and had been dead for at least a week.

He said that it was likely to have been a first baby and that there was no sign of proper attention at birth, adding that if there had been skilled attention that the baby might have survived.

The police said that they had made widespread inquiries to establish the identity of the mother but said that they had not been successful.

The Coroner at the Westminster inquest said that there was no evidence as to the exact circumstances of the child's death and an open verdict was returned.
