Date: 27 Aug 1903

Place: Beckfords Yard, Chipping Wycombe

Jane Lambourne died after her husband struck her twice on 24 August 1903 whilst in a state of intoxication.

However, it was heard that after he had struck her that she had gone to bed after which she had later got up to go downstairs and became giddy and fell down across a chair.

Her husband had been a labourer.

He was seen to strike her twice on 24 August 1903 as she lay in bed after which Jane Lambourne got up and went downstairs and shortly after vomited and became very giddy and fell down across a chair. She died three days later. It was heard that when her husband was later told of Jane Lambourne's injuries by his stepdaughter that he had said, 'Serve her right'.

The Coroner's inquest returned a verdict of manslaughter against Jane Lambourne's husband, but when the case was brought before the Assizes they said that there was not sufficient evidence to put him on trial for manslaughter and the charge was dismissed.

However, the judge noted that there was no justification for Jane Lambourne's husbands conduct whatever.

Jane Lambourne's husband had been a chair polisher.
