John Larssen

Age: 39

Sex: male

Date: 31 Oct 1903

Place: South Dock, Sunderland

John Larssen died from haemorrhage on the brain.

He was a Russian sailor and had been on board the SS Borrowdale and was said to have fallen down the hold of the steamer whilst it was in South Dock on the Saturday 31 October 1903.

He had been admitted to the Infirmary in an unconscious state suffering from lacerated hands and died later the same day.

A doctor that carried out a post mortem said that the cause of death was haemorrhage on the brain surface arising from violence and that a fall might have occasioned it.

At the inquest it was heard that the vessel had since left port but would be returning the following Saturday and it was noted that it was not good enough for vessels to kill men and then go away without jurisdiction and before the inquest had finished because it might have turned out to have been a case of murder or manslaughter amongst the men.
