Kevin Lavelle

Age: 29

Sex: male

Date: 24 Jun 2004

Place: Cricketers Pub, Middleton Road, Grimsbury, Banbury

Kevin Lavelle was attacked with an iron dumbbell outside the Cricketer's Pub in Grimsbury, Banbury, in June 2004.

A man was tried for his murder in 2006 but acquitted after it was heard that it was impossible to say who had caused the fatal blow.

He was said to have got into an argument with some men from Pontypridd in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales who were living above the pub with him.

He was beaten with a dumbbell and received about 50 injuries.

On the night, England had been playing Portugal in the Euro 2004 football competition and there had been about ten people in the pub.

Earlier in the evening he was said to have assaulted someone with a vacuum cleaner

He was from Bootle in Merseyside and had been working in Banbury at the time as a crane operator. He had been living above the Cricketer's Pub with a friend as well as a group of people from Wales.

Nine people were arrested at the time in relation to his murder and released on bail.

The police said 'At the time all the witnesses gave accounts of what happened. However, we do know that not everybody was entirely truthful as to what they recollected.'. They said that there were people in both Pontypridd and Banbury who could be key witnesses as well as people that knew what happened on the night.

His inquest ruled that he had been unlawfully killed.
