Age: 49

Sex: male

Date: 4 Nov 2018

Place: Braes Avenue, Whitecrook, Clydebank

James McGowan was found dead on a canal path off Braes Avenue near the Centre 81 sports centre on Sunday 4 November 2018 at about 4.45pm.

His death was described as unexplained.

A post mortem was carried out but his death was still described as being unexplained.

The police said that they were still trying to establish what happened to him and how he came by his injuries.

It was thought that he had been out in Glasgow where he had been assaulted in the Howard Street and Stockwell Place area after which he had got a bus and had travelled to the Drumchapel area where he eventually died on a canal path off Braes Avenue.

Following the discovery of his body a 42-year-old man was charged with assault and intent to rob.

The police said that James McGowan had been on a bus that had left Glasgow city centre at 1.50am on the night he died. They said, 'We know that James boarded a number 2 First Bus, which left Glasgow City Centre at 1.50am on Sunday, 4 November. He sat on the rear seat and travelled to Clydebank before walking along the Forth and Clyde Canal towards Braes Avenue'.

The police said, 'I am anxious to speak with anyone who may have seen Mr McGowan on Saturday night, 3 November or Sunday morning, 4 November or has any information about the incident in Howard Street'.

They also gave a description of James McGowan:

  • White.
  • 49-years-old.
  • Between 5ft 9in and 5ft 11in tall.
  • Medium build.
  • Wearing a green fisherman type jacket, with a burgundy hoody underneath, dark Jeans and black training shoes.

A detective said, 'We know that Mr McGowan frequents Glasgow City Centre and drinks within the Scotia Bar in Stockwell Street. In the early hours of Sunday morning, November 4, I believe Mr McGowan was in the company of a man in the vicinity of the St Enoch Centre and Howard Street. I am keen to trace this man as he may have vital information regarding Mr McGowan's movements'.

The man was described as:

  • White.
  • Late 20s.
  • About 5ft 10in tall.
  • Medium build.
  • Wearing a dark khaki hoodie jacket, black jeans and white trainers.

The detective went on to describe the man thought to have assaulted James McGowan in the Howard Street and Stockwell Place area, describing that man as:

  • White.
  • Late 30s.
  • About 5ft tall.
  • Slim build.
  • Wearing a dark jacket, black jeans and white trainers.

The 42-year-old man was later arrested and charged in connection with the alleged assault with intent to rob from James McGowan in the Howard Street and Stockwell Place area before his death. However, nothing more is known about the charges.

Following the 42-year-old man's arrest, the police said, 'We continue to treat Mr McGowan's death as unexplained at this time and are still trying to piece together his movements prior to his death'.

James McGowan was from Knightswood in Glasgow.
