The newly-born child of a woman was found with an apron string tied tightly round its neck.

The child's mother was tried for murder but acquitted.

The child's mother had been a 26-year-old barmaid at the Lansdowne Hotel in Bournemouth where she had been living at the time. she had given birth to the child in her bedroom there.

When a doctor called shortly after the birth, he asked her what she had done and she told him where it was, and the child was found soon after in a lumber room leading off her bedroom with an apron tied tightly round its neck.

However, she was acquitted of murder, but found guilty of concealment of birth and sentenced to nine months' imprisonment in the second division.
