Myra Myers was stabbed to death at her bedsit flat in Finchley Road, Hampstead.
A 20-year-old French man from Paris who lived nearby was said to have confessed to killing her because he thought she was a vampire, but was acquitted of murder and manslaughter.
The man tried had lived in a bedsit in the same building.
The man that was tried had been arrested outside Myra Myers's flat whilst he was waving his arms about, his hands covered in blood, and holding a palette knife and a sharpening steel, screaming:
Myra Myers was found stabbed mainly in the chest in her bedsit with blood-spattered over the walls. She was found lying on her divan bed dressed only in her nightie, but she had not been sexually interfered with.
The man was said to have put up a violent struggle with the police and when he was interviewed, he was said to have told the police that he thought that Myra Myers had been a vampire and that he had killed her to protect his Malaysian born girlfriend from her evil.
However, at his trial the man said that he was innocent. He denied that he had said that she was a vampire, although he admitted that he enjoyed horror films and had seen a film involving vampires with his girlfriend a few days before Myra Myers was murdered.
The man had been described by three psychiatrists as a homicidal maniac.
