Age: 33

Sex: male

Date: 28 May 2008

Place: Balsall Heath Road, Balsall Heath, West Midlands

Patrick Mellard was stabbed near his home in Orchards Way and was soon after found injured at the junction of Balsall Heath Road and Clevedon Road on 28 May 2008.

He had been stabbed in the upper torso and had an injury to the rear of his head and later died in hospital.

He was stabbed with a six-inch kitchen knife as he walked home past playing fields in Orchards Way at about 6.30pm. He had just been for a job interview.

It was thought that the attack on him was unprovoked.

During the investigation, the police received a number of anonymous letters naming a possible suspect, but no charges were made. The police appealed for the writer of the letters to come forward.

Five people were bailed over his murder, with three men questioned on suspicion of murder and two women on suspicion of assisting an offender.

A witness said that they had seen two men arguing shortly before. The man he was seen arguing with was described as:

  • Black.
  • Aged between 20 and 30.

Patrick Mellard was described as a quiet and reserved man and had lived at home with his mother and rarely went out. He was one of seven children.
