Joseph Maguire

Age: 2 months

Sex: male

Date: 17 Jan 1962

Place: Elgin Crescent, Notting Hill, London

Joseph Maguire died from haemorrhage due to a fractured skull on 17 January 1962.

He was found dead in his cot by his father at their home in Elgin Crescent, Notting Hill.

An open verdict was returned at his inquest.

He had been a twin and had been born by breach delivery in Queen charlotte's Hospital in Hammersmith on 16 November 1961.

His inquest heard that it was a mystery as to how he came by his injury and the Coroner said that there was insufficient evidence as to the circumstances of his death.

Joseph Maguire's had had a twin sister who his father said was born quite normally. He added:

Joseph seemed to be extraordinarily quiet when he came home about two weeks after his birth. On January 17 my wife was preparing a bath for the twins and left Joseph in his cot. But when I picked him up he was just not moving. I took him to a doctor, who told me the baby was dead. To my knowledge he had not received a knock or a fall on the head.

His mother said that he couldn't recollect Joseph Maguire having knocked his head, but had noticed that he had been quiet and had 'cried pathetically'.

The doctor that attended the delivery of the twins said that the girl had been born normally, but that forceps had been used to deliver Joseph Maguire. She added:

I have heard that a fracture of the skull can be caused by forceps.

The doctor that carried out the post mortem said that Joseph Maguire died from a haemorrhage due to a fracture of the skull and that he though the fracture had been a fresh one.
