Joseph Cann died in a road accident on 10 July 1961 on the Great North Road at Tuxford.

He was involved in a collision with a lorry that had overtaken taken another lorry, crossing a solid white line, and which crashed into Joseph Cann's Auston Seven car. The collision took place at about 10pm.

Joseph Cann was taken to Newark Hospital where he was found to be dead on arrival. However, it was later said that he had died instantly. His death was stated to have been due to multiple fractures of the skull, but he had other injuries as well.

At the inquest the lorry driver declined to give evidence.

It was said that he had made a statement to the police in which he admitted crossing the white line and to have been travelling at 35mph at the time.

A BBC message was put out in an effort to trace the driver of a black car that had been travelling behind Joseph Cann at the time of the crash.

Joseph Cann had lived in Shaftesbury Avenue on the Bull Farm Estate in Mansfield. His brother said that he had been driving for about two years and had passed his test.

The lorry driver had lived in Laing Grove, High Howdon, Wallsend in Northumberland.

An open verdict was returned.
