James Harmon went missing after driving off to Rainham and was never seen again.
He was last seen in Mawney Road, Romford when he left his girlfriend's home at 3am to visit a friend in Rainham after receiving a call on his mobile phone. He was due to return at about 8pm but never came back.
He had had a silver Mercedes 190E saloon car, registration A872 GBA, which was later found in Bexley Gardens off Barley Lane, near to King George's Hospital in Ilford.
He had been a part-time bouncer and said to have been involved in the criminal fraternity associated with door security. He was a well-known doorman at a number of clubs and pubs across the east of London including the Robin Hood Public House in Longbridge Road, Dagenham.
He had also been a mechanic.
He was last seen on 24 January 1998 and the police said that they thought that he was murdered soon after.
He was white, 5ft 7in tall and had a stocky build with short cropped brown hair.
When he left his girlfriend's house he had been wearing a blue 'Budweiser' T shirt, tracksuit bottoms and trainers.
