Egle Vengaliene

Age: 35

Sex: female

Date: 9 Apr 2021

Place: Brandon Country Park

Egle Vengaliene was found dead by a pond in Brandon Country Park on 9 April 2021.

Her husband was charged with her murder and due to be tried but the case was discontinued after the Crown Prosecution Service said that there was insufficient evidence to continue. They had been living together at the time in Brandon.

A dog walker had seen her husband trying to resuscitate her after having apparently pulled her from the pond, but said that he first thought he was throttling her.

He said that his attention was first directed to the pond when he heard screaming and that when he went to investigate he found Egle Vengaliene’s husband positioned over her body, which was still half in the water, adding that he thought he was trying to strangle her.

He said:

I saw a pushing down motion, it looked like he was throttling her. But as I got closer, I could see it was not what I thought it was, he was trying to do chest compressions. He was holding her with his left hand and he was pressing his right hand on her chest.

However, at the inquest he noted that he had been trained in CPR and could see the chest compressions were being performed incorrectly.

He said that he then called the emergency services and tried to help Egle Vengaliene’s husband perform CPR and also went off to get a defibrillator.

However, Egle Vengaliene was soon after declared dead at the scene.

At her inquest it was noted that she had been seen earlier walking around Brandon Country Park in a black and white long-sleeved T-shirt and wearing no coat or shoes. She had been seen walking through a woodland there, wet through, on what was described as a cold morning. She also went up to the window of the care home at the country park and asked for help.

Egle Vengaliene died from drowning but the police were unable to state how it occurred.

Egle Vengaliene had lived in Bury Road in Brandon, Suffolk with her husband and had five children. She was from Lithuania.

Suffolk Police said its inquiry would remain open.
