Baby

Age: 0

Sex: female

Date: 14 May 2020

Place: Sackers, Needham Market, Suffolk

The body of a newly-born female child was found at the Sackers recycling facility in Needham Market, Suffolk on 14 May 2020.

The post mortem showed that the child had been born alive, however, it was noted that injuries the child received whilst being at the waste processing plant hindered the medical examination as well as the police enquiry.

Because of the other injuries, possibly caused at the waste facility, it was not possible to say whether one single cause or a combination of causes resulted in her death. However, it was noted that she received a head injury prior to her death.

It was said that the baby had been born alive at full-term and had been from a black or mixed ethnicity background.

It was thought that the baby had been taken to the waste facility on the day it was found. It was further determined that the baby had probably arrived in one of two waste collection vehicles that had collected commercial waste from 52 locations throughout the day, it being noted that the waste had come from businesses and not private homes.

The 52 locations were mostly in and around the Ipswich area, with some of the locations being between Ipswich and the waste facility in Needham Market.

The police said that 11,000 hours of CCTV footage was examined and over 800 addresses were visited.

The baby was referred to as Baby S.

A funeral was held for the child on 17 February 2022.

It was noted that the child would have been born during the first UK Covid lockdown.
