Alex Ajanaku

Age: 18

Sex: male

Date: 1 Sep 2021

Place: Beaumont Road, Beaumont Estate, Leyton, London

Alex Ajanaku was shot at an illegal rave on the Beaumont Estate on 1 September 2021.

The police later released images of 20 potential witnesses who had been at the rave in case they had information.

They also released CCTV footage.

The rave was an unlicenced event that was held on the Beaumont Estate on 31 August 2021 and the police said that there would have been a large number of people there.

The police were called out at 1.25am on 1 September 2021 following reports that Alex Ajanaku had been shot.

The police said that most of the people at the event had left, but a small group remained and had been sitting on a bench in Beaumont Road when a car drove past and shot at them.

Alex Ajanaku had been sitting on the bench with his brother and some friends at the time of the shooting.

It was thought that the car had been a black Kia Sportage that had been stolen earlier on in Chingford shortly before midnight on 16 August 2021. It was later found abandoned with fire damaged in Walthamstow on 3 September 2021.

The police arrested four people during their investigation on 21 and 22 March 2023 with a series of warrants, but no charges were made. One of them had been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder whilst the other four were arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. They were:

  1. 28-year-old man: suspicion of conspiracy to murder.
  2. 23-year-old man: suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
  3. 22-year-old man: suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
  4. 22-year-old man: suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

A 43-year-old man had been arrested earlier on 2 September 2021 on suspicion of murder but he was later released with no further action to be taken against him.

It was noted that earlier on in the night, about 11.50pm, 31 August, that a moped rider with a pillion passenger rode through the event and that it caused the crowd to disperse.

The police appealed for information, saying:

At about 23.50hrs on August 31 2021 there was an incident on the estate when a moped rider with a pillion passenger rode through the event and it caused the crowd to disperse. Did you see this incident? Whilst we do not believe the incident with the moped was the catalyst for Alex’s murder, we want to build up as detailed a picture as possible as to what occurred on the estate that night. Any piece of information could be crucial to the investigation.
