Valerie Ainscow was found dead on a building site. A man was tried for her murder but aquitted.
She was unmarried and lived at home and was an assistant in the staff canteen at Lewis's Limited in Manchester. She was slightly mentally handicapped and had difficulty with co-ordination of movement.
She was strangled.
