Gilbert Barrett was shot at Balham Tube Station on Saturday 5 March 1983 at about 4.30pm.
He had been shot at point blank range through the ticket office window.
He had been a London Tube station ticket clerk, having worked for London Transport for 13 years.
The police criticised passengers who turned a blind eye to the shooting, saying:
It was noted that although Balham High Road was packed with thousands of people doing their shopping at the time, that it was empty in the station at the time the raiders struck.
Gilbert Barrett was found lying in a pool of blood in his ticket office. It was thought that he might have been shot because he had refused to hand over £150, which were left untouched. his body was found by another clerk.
It was noted that there were no eye-witnesses to the shooting.
Gilbert Barrett had lived alone in Cubitt House in Poynders End, Clapham.
