John McNally was found injured in Shaftoe Street and died seven weeks later.
He first said that he had simply collapsed, but later said he was hit by a car.
He had a broken arm, broken leg and face injuries.
Doctors said that it was unlikely that his injuries were caused by a simple collapse. However, the police said that they could find no trace of an accident.
He had told an ambulance driver that he had just collapsed and had not been knocked down. However, three weeks later he claimed that he had been knocked down by a car that didn't stop. He had been unable to give any description of the car.
He had lived in Savoury Road, Rosehill in Wallsend.
An open verdict was returned.
