Amarpal Atkar was injured following an argument in Stephenson Street, near to Birmingham Grand Central on 31 July 2021.

He had been out drinking at the Be At One Bar in Birmingham, where he was a regular, when he later got involved in an argument with a stranger outside in Stephenson Street, who punched him, knocking him down.

A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of his murder and later charged with his manslaughter, however, on  27 January 2024 it was reported that the Crown Prosecution Service had made the decision not to prosecute him. It was noted that Amarpal Atkar's family requested that the decision be reviewed under the Victim's Right to Review scheme, but that they again decided not to pursue any charges.

Further, on 2 July 2024, the Coroner at his inquest accepted that the man had acted in self-defence.

The inquest herd that they had bumped into each other in Stephenson Street at about 1.30am after which Amarpal Atkar was heard to shout insults at the man, calling him a 'ginger t***' and 'Ed Sheeran', before shouting:

Hit me, hit me.

After that, the man was said to have hit Amarpal Atkar in the face and knocking him to the ground. However, it was heard that Amarpal Atkar then got up again and pursued the man after which the man punched him again, causing what was described as the fatal injury to his head.

Amarpal Atkar was soon after found unresponsive outside the entrance to Birmingham New Street station and taken to hospital, but died later that evening.

After the inquest, Amarpal Atkar's family said:

We feel let down by the justice system, CPS and today's inquest.

The head doorman at the Be At One bar, where Amarpal Atkar was a regular and likened to a 'celebrity', said that he was known to be mouthy, but had never been known to be offensive or violent.

Amarpal Atkar's family added that they had vowed to continue their fight, including efforts to change the six-month limit to change a criminal charge.
