Kunil Nur

Kunil Nur died after being assaulted near his flat in Linney Square, a housing estate in Wigan, after midnight on 4 October 2021.

He was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital where he died six days later on 10 October 2021.

Kunil Nur was thought to have suffered a serious head wound following a physical altercation with some people living nearby.

Two men and a woman were arrested on suspicion of murder but no one was charged.

It was reported that the police had been called out to Linney Square shortly after midnight on 4 October 2021 after receiving reports that Kunil Nur was trying to break into a property. When they arrived, Kunil Nur was trying to clot bleeding from a wound to his head.

Neighbours said that they heard screaming and shouting coming from a flat in Linney Square. However, it was stated that the details of his death were not clear.

He was then arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage, but was not taken into custody as he required hospital treatment.

He was later discharged, but was then found to have been an a mental health facility. His family said that that had been done:

Kunil Nur had been a Somali refugee and it was heard that he had suffered racist abuse before his murder and had been forced to sleep at a fiends house. It was also reported that he had adked to be moved to another property, but that he Wigan Council denied that.

However, the Greater Manchester Police confirmed that Kunil Nur had reported on three occasions before his murder:

1. 25 June 2021, report of a group of children shouting racial abuse in the street, which was reported as a crime.
2. 28 September 2021, report of alleged racial abuse.
3. 2 October 2021, report of alleged racial abuse.

It was noted that prior to the reports made by Kunil Nur, that he had had no prior contact with the police.

Kunil Nur's cousin later said:

Following his death the Independent Office for Police Conduct said that they were investigating the case and the previous contact Kunil had with the police.

Kunil Nur had come to the United Kingdom 15 years earlier and had and volunteered at the SWAP Project in Wigan, a refugee support organisation.
